A clinical research paper co-authored by representatives of Central Asian University has been published in "Cureus", an international peer-reviewed medical journal indexed in PubMed Central (PMC) and published under the Springer Nature portfolio.
The publication, titled "Acute Unilateral Vision Loss in a 61-Year-Old Woman: Distinguishing Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NAION) from Optic Neuritis and Papilledema," was authored by Professor Mokhiryam Alieva of the Department of Ophthalmology at AKFA Medline University Hospital, together with sixth-year CAU School of Medicine students Elizaveta Yagudaeva, Javokhir Juraev, and Diyora Khakimjonova.
The clinical case report examines acute unilateral vision loss and addresses the diagnostic challenge of differentiating non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) from conditions with similar presentations, including optic neuritis and papilledema. NAION is among the leading causes of sudden vision loss in adults over the age of 50.
The authors describe the role of comprehensive ophthalmologic assessment and the use of diagnostic methods such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in establishing an accurate diagnosis.
