CAU Professor Advances Research and International Collaboration in South Korea

Professor Muhammad Saiful Islam Khan from the Medical School at Central Asian University has successfully completed a research tenure as a Visiting Scholar at the Korea Food Research Institute (KFRI) in the Republic of Korea, further strengthening CAU’s international research partnerships and advancing interdisciplinary scientific collaboration.
During his research visit, Professor Khan worked on two key projects at the intersection of food microbiology, analytical science, and plasma-based environmental remediation.
Advancing Research in Food Safety and Environmental Science
One of the projects focused on the biofilm formation of Hafnia bacteria under nutrient-deficient conditions, together with its analytical characterization. The research aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of bacterial biofilm behavior and support the development of improved approaches to food safety.
The second project explored the plasma-based inactivation and degradation of malachite green, an environmental contaminant. The study investigates the potential of plasma technology as an advanced and environmentally friendly approach to pollutant treatment.
The research conducted during the visit is expected to result in at least two peer-reviewed publications in high-impact international journals, contributing to the growing body of scientific research emerging from CAU’s international collaborations.
Scientific Exchange at KAIST
As part of his research itinerary, Professor Khan also visited the Applied Plasma Research & Innovation Lab (APRIL) at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology).
The visit provided an opportunity for scientific exchange with leading plasma researchers, including Professor Wonho Choe and Professor Sanghoo Park. Discussions covered cutting-edge plasma technologies, advanced electrode design, and emerging applications of plasma in environmental and biological research.
A particularly notable part of the visit was the opportunity to explore an extensive historical archive documenting the development of plasma electrodes from the early 2000s to the present. The archive offered valuable insights into the evolution of plasma technology and its potential for future applications.
Strengthening CAU’s Global Research Network
Professor Khan’s research visit represents another important step in expanding CAU’s international academic and research network. Collaboration with leading Korean research institutions creates new opportunities for joint projects, knowledge exchange, and future scientific partnerships.
Through initiatives such as these, CAU continues to promote interdisciplinary research, strengthen international academic connections, and contribute to impactful scholarship with global relevance.
