Central Asian University Professor Publishes Research on Breast Reconstruction Safety in International Medical Journal
Central Asian University is proud to announce that a faculty member of the School of Medicine has contributed to advancing global medical knowledge through the publication of a new scientific study titled “Oncological Safety of Autologous Fat Grafting Following Breast Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgery: A Systematic Review.”
The article was published last week in the prestigious Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and is indexed in PubMed, the world-renowned biomedical database maintained by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The systematic review examines one of the most important questions in modern reconstructive and aesthetic breast surgery: whether autologous fat grafting - a procedure that uses a patient’s own fat tissue to restore breast volume and contour - is oncologically safe for women who have undergone treatment for breast cancer.
Autologous fat grafting has become increasingly popular in both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery due to its natural appearance, biocompatibility, and ability to improve aesthetic outcomes. However, concerns have remained regarding its potential influence on cancer recurrence. Through a comprehensive analysis of the available scientific literature, the study evaluates current evidence on the relationship between fat grafting procedures and long-term oncological outcomes.
The review contributes to a growing body of international research suggesting that autologous fat grafting does not increase the risk of cancer recurrence, metastasis, or mortality in breast cancer patients undergoing reconstruction. Multiple large-scale studies and meta-analyses reviewed by the authors have reported no significant association between fat grafting and adverse oncological outcomes.
