Opening Ceremony of the SDG Innovation Lab at CAU

Central Asian University has officially inaugurated its SDG Innovation Lab — a visionary hub designed to ignite new ideas, empower young changemakers, and embed sustainability into every aspect of university life.
The launch marks a significant milestone in strengthening CAU’s role as one of the region’s leading institutions in sustainable development, innovation, and applied research.

A Gathering of Leaders, Innovators, and Partners

The opening ceremony brought together CAU leadership, international partners, government representatives, faculty members, and students. The atmosphere was filled with energy and purpose, reflecting a collective commitment to advancing sustainability-driven initiatives at the university.
Shirin Yunusova, Vice Rector for Research and Innovation, delivered an inspiring opening address, highlighting the importance of integrating sustainability into academic processes, research, and student-led initiatives. She emphasized that the SDG Innovation Lab would become a catalyst for transformative ideas and a powerful platform for nurturing a new generation of responsible leaders.
Presentations: Vision, Expertise, and Regional Priorities

The event featured a series of insightful presentations from leading experts and partners:

• Prof. H. Elif Kutlugun, Head of the SDG Innovation Lab, presented the Lab’s strategic vision, research priorities, and upcoming initiatives.

• Prof. Gary Grossman (Arizona State University) highlighted the progress and challenges of SDG implementation across Central Asia.

• Dilora Ganieva (UNFPA) spoke about the key role of innovation in advancing gender equality and driving social impact.

• Ulug’bek Qulliyev, representative of the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Uzbekistan, emphasized the alignment between SDG activities and national green economy goals.
CAU faculty also showcased ongoing sustainability-focused initiatives — including GreenEngine, CirculEC, and the EMPOWER Project — demonstrating the university’s practical contributions to environmental and social advancement.

Students at the Center of Innovation

A main highlight of the ceremony was the student project showcase, where participants presented their sustainability-driven ideas, engaged in a Q&A session, and took part in a poster walk-through.

Their work covered responsible consumption, ecological solutions, digital sustainability tools, and social innovation. Guests noted the high level of creativity, analytical thinking, and relevance demonstrated by the students.

A New Hub for Interdisciplinary Collaboration

The SDG Innovation Lab will serve as a unifying platform that brings together all sustainability-related activities at CAU under one umbrella — from student initiatives and international projects to research programs and institutional partnerships.
The Lab aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, support pilot projects, strengthen global connections, and enhance CAU’s contribution to addressing regional and global sustainability challenges.

The opening of the SDG Innovation Lab is not just an event — it marks the beginning of a new chapter in which Central Asian University will play an even greater role in shaping a sustainable future for the region and beyond.
