From CAU to Cleveland Clinic: Temurkhon Tillakhodjaev’s Journey in Medicine

What does it take to build a career in medicine and learn from some of the world’s leading medical professionals? For Central Asian University (CAU) graduate Temurkhon Tillakhodjaev, the answer lies in continuous learning, hands-on clinical experience, and the determination to keep moving forward.

Temurkhan is currently completing a month-long observership at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, one of the leading medical institutions in the United States. Based in the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, he is gaining first-hand exposure to modern surgical approaches, observing discussions of complex clinical cases, and learning how specialists collaborate to deliver high-quality patient care.

For Temurkhon, this experience represents more than an opportunity to observe international medical practice. It is another milestone in a professional journey that began six years ago at CAU, where he built the foundation for his career in medicine.
During his observership at Cleveland Clinic, Temurkhon has been particularly impressed by the systematic approach to patient care and the close collaboration between specialists from different disciplines. He has observed how evidence-based medicine, patient safety, and careful treatment planning shape clinical decision-making.

Continuous professional development, in-depth clinical discussions, and multidisciplinary teamwork are also central to the experience. For Temurkhan, these observations offer valuable insights into international medical practices that he hopes to apply in the future to contribute to the development of healthcare in Uzbekistan.
He has also had the opportunity to learn about the work of specialists at the Head and Neck Institute, with a particular focus on rhinology, skull base surgery, and head and neck oncology. Observing surgical procedures and discussing complex clinical cases have given him a deeper understanding of preoperative planning, surgical decision-making, and multidisciplinary patient management.

The experience has further reinforced the importance of thorough preparation, staying up to date with scientific literature, and effective communication among medical professionals.
Temurkhon’s journey in medicine began in 2019, when he enrolled at Central Asian University with the ambition of becoming a surgeon. At the time, however, he had not yet decided which specialty to pursue.

Over six years at the CAU School of Medicine, clinical exposure, medical olympiads, and guidance from mentors helped him discover his professional calling: otolaryngology.
In 2025, he graduated from CAU and went on to pursue his residency at Akfa Medline University Hospital, where he now works as a resident physician in otolaryngology. His work involves patient care, participation in surgical procedures, and scientific research.

He is particularly drawn to complex clinical cases that demand precision, analytical thinking, and a high level of responsibility. Surgery remains the most rewarding and exciting aspect of his profession.

“What inspires me most is the opportunity to make a real difference in a patient’s life. Seeing someone recover and return to their everyday life is the strongest motivation to keep moving forward,” says Temurkhon Tillakhodjaev.

For Temurkhon, becoming a good physician means never stopping at what has already been learned. He actively seeks opportunities to expand his knowledge, strengthen his practical skills, and stay informed about advances in his specialty.
In March 2026, he attended a rhinology conference in South Korea, where he explored the latest scientific developments and emerging trends in the field. He also completed a cadaveric course in ENT surgery in Moscow, designed to deepen his anatomical knowledge and refine his surgical skills.

These experiences complement the clinical foundation he developed during his studies at CAU and reflect his commitment to continuous professional growth.

When choosing CAU, Temurkhon was drawn to its English-medium instruction, Western educational approaches, and faculty members with international experience. During his studies, he participated in conferences, research projects, and internships, gradually building his understanding of medicine and the responsibilities of the profession.
Looking back, he identifies clinical reasoning and effective communication as two of the most valuable skills he gained during his education. In his view, being a physician requires more than medical knowledge. It also means being able to analyse information, make well-informed decisions, and build effective relationships with patients and colleagues.
His journey from CAU to Cleveland Clinic demonstrates how a strong educational foundation, combined with initiative and a commitment to lifelong learning, can open doors to international professional opportunities.

As he continues to develop his expertise in otolaryngology, Temurkhon Tillakhodjaev aims to bring the knowledge and experience he gains abroad back to Uzbekistan, contributing to better patient care and the continued development of the country’s healthcare system.
